Breaking on De Dam: Back to the Street brought hip-hop culture back to the centre of Zaandam
For one day the square in front of the town hall became a dance floor: battles for teenagers and adults, graffiti, rap, and a cypher that ran until midnight at De Groote Weiver.
On Saturday 22 August there was no stage on De Dam in Zaandam. There was a floor. From 13:00 everything revolved around the circle: dancers taking each other on one at a time, a crowd pressed tight around them, and a DJ setting the pace.
Back to the Street is run by Stichting Coffee & Dance. The idea behind it is simple and quietly radical: take the battles out of the venue and put them back on the street, where the culture came from. For the culture, by the culture, as the organisers put it. Entry was free all day.
Three categories, one circle
The breaking battles opened at 13:00 across three categories: girls under 17, boys under 17, and adults. The judging panel included Menno van Gorp - four-time world breaking champion and an Olympic competitor - alongside Jurskee and B-Boy Trace. Mario Bee and Eszteca hosted; Scales, SD and Nobody Knows handled the music.
Around the battles, the day kept moving: an open mic for rap and beatbox from 14:00, three hours of live graffiti, DJ sets, and an open cypher anyone could step into.
From De Dam to De Groote Weiver
When the outdoor programme wound down, the day moved to De Groote Weiver. The open jam started at 19:00, followed at 20:00 by the 7 to Smoke All Style Battle: eight dancers, one-on-one rounds. The jam carried on afterwards, with DJ Nobody Knows from 22:00 until midnight.
Why this belongs on a square
A battle on a public square isn't a performance you watch from a distance. You're either in the circle or leaning into it. There's no door, no ticket, and no moment where someone decides whether you belong - you walk onto De Dam and you're already in it.
That's what makes the difference for a kid from Zaandam who has never seen a cypher up close. Not the names on the flyer, but the zero metres between the crowd and the floor.
That the youth categories were treated as seriously as the adults - their own battles, their own judges, their own moment on the square - says plenty about what Back to the Street was set up to do.
